CHAMPIONSHIP GAME   GAME 9:  OLDHAM vs. ST. XAVIER  3:30 pm

OLDHAM 4 ST. XAVIER 3

In a game worthy of being a championship tilt, top seeded Oldham proved their championship mettle, as they held off third-seeded St. Xavier 4-3. St. X got on top first with a goal at the 9:18 mark, by Andrew Hill.  Less than two minutes later, Oldham was called for a slashing penalty, and the Tigers were looking to get a two goal margin on the regular season champs.  But Oldham responded like champions, and were able to get a shorthanded goal by Teddy Brady, to knot the game at 1-1. With just over a minute left in the first period, the league's leading scorer Conor Matsen scored to give Oldham a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.

In the second period, St. X evened things up with a goal at the 7:13 mark by Deron Steinbrecher off a beautiful pass from Alex Senn.  That is how things would stay until 2:33 remained when Robbie Hennessey scored a magnificent unassisted goal. Stealing the puck deep in his offensive zone, he quickly avoided a defenseman, moved in on goal, made a beautiful deke and put the biscuit in the basket for a 3-2 lead.

When Ivan Afanasyev scored with 3:52 left in the game for Oldham, it appeared they were home free. But this St. X team, who got better and better all season long, would not quit, and got a goal back just 42 seconds later when Alex Senn scored to make it 4-3.  The tension was back in the air for the good crowd at Lexington Ice Center to see if we were headed to overtime or if the regular season champs could deal the deal in the tournament.  The champs rose to the occassion, turned up the defense and even after St. X pulled goalie Nuss, kept the Tigers at bay to clain their first State Championship.

In the 3 games Oldham had 7 goals from 7 diferent players in the quarterfinals, 7 goals from 6 different players in the semis, and 4 goals from 4 different players in the championship game, and amazing display of depth and offensive firepower.  Perhaps a victim of their own multi faceted scoring options, the OUTSTANDING PLAYER AWARD  then was left to the anchor of the defense, Sal Olivet, the honorable mention all state goalie, who recorded a shutout in the semi finals, and allowed only 5 goals over the entire weekend.

SUMMARY: OLDHAM-GOALS: Brady,  C Matsen, R Hennessey, I Afanasyev  ASSISTS: Shacklette 2,
N Matsen  GOALTENDING: Olivet 12 saves  ST. X-GOALS: Hill, Steinbrecher, Senn ASSISTS: Senn 2, Steinbrecher 2, Booth  GOALTENDING: Nuss 34 saves
